Brent Hulke – Research Leader

Brent is a Minnesota native who received his PhD in Applied Plant Sciences from the University of Minnesota.  He is the research leader for our lab, and currently working as a Research Geneticist at the United States Department of Agriculture’s Agricultural Research Service in Fargo, North Dakota.  He aims to apply sunflower breeding and quantitative genetics to further sunflower as an agricultural species.  Brent is a wonderful father and husband who enjoys working out, going on weekend trips, and pushing the boundaries of science.  Please do not hesitate to contact him with any questions you may have.

Qingming Gao – Post-Doctoral Associate

Qingming is from Inner Mongolia China and received his PhD in Plant Pathology from the University of Kentucky.  He currently serves as a Post-Doctoral Associate in our lab, and aims to land a faculty job or research scientist job in industry.  Qingming enjoys playing tennis and badminton, hiking, and traveling with his wife, Sheila. Stephan Reinert – Post-Doctoral Associate

Stephan grew up in a small village in Germany. After finishing high school he started his bachelor’s in Biology at Düsseldorf University, Germany. Following graduation, he pursued a master’s in Plant Genetics at Leibniz University of Hanover. Stephan moved to Fargo recently from Bonn, where he received his PhD in Plant Breeding. He currently serves as a Post-Doctoral Associate in our lab, and is interested in evolutionary biology, domestication, and genomics assisted breeding. Stephan is an avid boulderer who enjoys exploring the world with his wife, Anna, and son, Anton.

Brady Koehler – Technician

Brady is also a Minnesota native who completed his Bachelor’s of Science Degree in Agribusiness at North Dakota State University.  He is currently working in our lab as a technician, and is a large part of our lab’s success.  His hobbies include playing sports, biking, working out, socializing, and watching movies.  Feel free to contact him with any questions you may have.

Mike Grove – Technician
Mike grew up on a farm near Roosevelt, MN and obtained his bachelor’s degree in Agricultural Economics from North Dakota State University in 2014. He currently works in our lab as a technician, and looks forward to expanding his role in agricultural research. Mike enjoys camping, hiking, mountain biking, and tennis.


Brian Smart – Graduate Student and Webmaster

Brian is a Wisconsin native who received his Bachelor of Art’s Degree in Evolutionary Biology from the University of Colorado.  He is pursuing a double master’s degree in Plant Sciences and Software Engineering at North Dakota State University under the advisement of Dr. Brent Hulke.  He thoroughly enjoys outdoor activities with his dog, socializing, working out, biking, and video games.  Don’t hesitate to text, email, or call him!

Cloe Pogoda- Graduate Student

cloeCloe received her BA from the University of Colorado Boulder in May 2011 with majors in Molecular, Cellular, and Developmental Biology (MCDB) and Biochemistry, and a minor in Chemistry. She is rostered in the MCD Biology program at CU Boulder. Cloe is interested in using genomic tools to address a variety of ecological and evolutionary questions in a range of biological systems. Cloe currently lives in Boulder and enjoys spending time with her dogs and horse.


Keegan Jones – Research Intern

Keegan is a senior at NDSU studying Mechanical Engineering. He grew up in Stillwater, MN, and made his way to Fargo, ND, after living a bit in Duluth, MN. His first career goal is to find a decent entry-level engineering gig, and see where it takes him! Mr. Jones is not too picky where he ends up for engineering work, although he does enjoy getting creative, working with his hands, and becoming heavily involved in whatever project he work on. Outside of school and work Keegan really enjoys biking, sampling beers at local breweries, collecting vinyl records (anything from classic rock, to french house, to jazz, to opera), and hoping a Minnesota team will win some sort of championship sometime soon.

Erin Rausch – Research Intern

Erin is a native of Randall, MN who is pursuing her Bachelor of Science Degree in Agricultural and Biosystems Engineering at North Dakota State University. She is interested in machine design and really enjoys welding. Outside of the lab, Erin likes to read books, see movies with friends, spend time with her nieces and nephews, and relax by cleaning. Dylan Barry – Research Intern

Dylan Barry is from rural Ashbury, MN and currently attends North Dakota State University in pursuit of a bachelor’s degree in Crop and Weed Science. Dylan aims to become an agricultural research scientist, and is exploring graduate school opportunities. Dylan enjoys fishing, swimming, and sports in his free time.


Kennedy Money – Research Intern

Kennedy was born in Wichita Falls, TX and, being a military brat, she moved around quite often. She did most of her growing up in North Carolina, so this is where she claims as “home.” Ms. Money is an undergraduate student studying agronomy, and is applying for graduate school after graduation. Kennedy likes to have fun with her friends and, when not doing schoolwork, relaxing. She also flies to see her parents often; they live in Louisville, KY and she loves to see them when possible.

Jordan Nelson – Technician (Nuseed)

Jordan is a Minnesota native who received his Bachelor of Science Degree in Agricultural Economics from North Dakota State University. He is currently working as a Research Technician for Nuseed. His hobbies outside of work include playing and watching sports, watching movies, and socializing.


Jon Tetlie – Graduate Student (University of Illinois at Urbana–Champaign)

Jon is a native of St. Paul who received his Bachelor of Art’s Degree in Biology and Environmental Studies from Concordia College in Moorhead. He is currently attending the University of Illinois pursuing his masters degree in entomology and ecology. Outside of the lab, Jon enjoys soccer, nordic skiing, camping, baking bread, and brewing his own beer.


Greta Rockstad – Undergraduate Student (University of Minnesota)

Greta is another Minnesota native who is studying genetics at the University of Minnesota. She is specifically interested in plant genetics. In her free time, she enjoys lake life, reading, trying new recipes, and exploring. She appreciates good puns and discussions about Harry Potter.


Elena Rivera – Undergraduate Student (University of Puerto Rico in Mayaguez)

Elena was born in Manati, Puerto Rico, and attended high school in Hatillo. She is pursuing her bachelor’s degree in Agribusiness at the University of Puerto Rico in Mayaguez. She hopes to one day run her own business! Her hobbies include sports, trying different foods, watching Netflix, travelling, and going to the beach.
