Using SNPs and Applying Them to Sunflower’s Problems – What Will This Look Like?

Brent Hulke

Abstract: Genomics is providing plant breeders with new ways to integrate basic genetic knowledge with conventional breeding protocols to solve important problems. This presentation demonstrated the practical value of SNP (single nucleotide polymorphism) markers to augment traditional breeding programs. Problems that are commonly encountered by sunflower breeders were presented along with a solution that involved this marker technology. One specific solution was for downy mildew resistance. It was demonstrated that marker technology may reduce total cost to run a breeding program that includes downy mildew resistance as a key component. The audience was marketers, businesspeople, and plant breeders in the sunflower industry.
