Advances in breeding at USDA

Brent Hulke

Abstract: Genetic research of the sunflower research unit, USDA-ARS, in Fargo, ND, was discussed in a presentation to a group of producers, industry representatives, and scientists. The need for sunflower genetic research is ever increasing with more insect and disease problems nationwide. Preliminary data on experimental hybrids to combat these problems was discussed. Ongoing collaboration with other scientists in North America was illustrated. Information was provided on how to effectively use genetic (or molecular) markers in sunflower breeding.
